JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision of Chief of Police, maintains city streets free of stray, injured and dead animals.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Routinely patrols city streets to pick up stray and dead animals; cleans and maintains animal shelter daily; submit a detailed report of any incident, issue citations for violations of animal control laws; appears in Municipal Court to testify regarding violations of animal control laws; must understand the health necessity of destroying animals and must be agreeable to perform this function; lift 50 lbs. (i.e. animals, feed, cages, carcasses, etc.); stand, bend, lift and pursue stray animals; deal with the public on a daily basis; some evening, weekend and on-call work required; public relation skills; coordinate annual rabies vaccination clinic. Any additional duties as assigned by a supervisor.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
Change and maintain carbon monoxide gas cylinders connecting euthanizing chamber; use of injectable euthanasia products; reachable by telephone for emergency calls after normal operating hours; perform other duties as directed by City Manager. Provide services to the general public when emergency conditions warrant it, either in preparation for, or as a reaction to, one or more disastrous events such as: a civil disturbance, hurricane, tornado, earthquake, flood, ice storm, fire, chemical accident including a hazardous material spill, possible public exposure to hazardous conditions, or other disasters which threaten the safety of the citizens.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES:
High School Diploma; Texas Driver License; ability to obtain certification by the Texas Department of Health as certified basic Animal Control Officer within one (1) year of employment.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
One (1) year experience field related to animal control or veterinarian medicine; vehicle driving record must be satisfactory according to City of Fort Stockton Department Rules and Regulations; able to deal with the public and fellow employees in a tactful, considerate manner; concerned and interested in providing humane treatment for animals.
